Book Review : "Love At Last Sight" by Kerry & Chris Shook

I have had this book for several months now. It reads out a nice monthly plan, of ways to help improve your relationships Not just love/intimate ones, but all of them. Whether with friends, children, strangers, etc. I was trying to originally read it in the way suggested, which is day-to-day, with something to 'work on' for each; but found myself having to go several days, if not weeks, in between readings, as I tried to use the ideas, or time constraints in being able to sit down and focus on what I am reading. I did finally finish it, and it has helped me. I recommend it for everyone in late teens and older!

Ugh! Been away!

It has been almost 3 months since I posted here with a review, and for that I have no excuse. I just got in the mood to not do them. Besides, I was feeling like they were pretty cheesy reviews anyways. I was hoping to get better, but can see that  will be needing MUCH MORE practice.  'Nough said.

Movie Review : "Equilibrium"

In a futuristic world, a strict regime has eliminated war by suppressing emotions: Books, art and music are strictly forbidden, and feeling is a crime punishable by death -- a rule that's enforced by feeding the denizens a mood-limiting drug. John Preston (Christian Bale) is a top government official responsible for destroying those who resist the rules. But when he misses a dose of his own medication, he experiences a pang of conscience. - taken from Netflix.com

I originally picked this movie out as Christian Bale was the main actor. I don't think I made it through the first 20 minutes before I turned it off. Made in 2002, another storyline of 'destroy mankind's emotions, and society functions best'. Including flags that were near imitations of Nazi flags, and a similar look to '1984'. One star.

Movie Review : "Tangled"

Disney animators take on the classic Grimm Brothers story of Rapunzel (Mandy Moore), a long-locked beauty imprisoned in a secluded tower by evil hag Mother Gothel (Donna Murphy), who needs the rejuvenating powers of Rapunzel's tresses to remain young. When a bandit on the lam (Zachary Levi) helps Rapunzel escape, the old crone plots to recapture her and end her budding romance with the thief in this Golden Globe nominee for Best Animated Feature. - taken from Netflix.com

Another great Disney movie. My boys had watched it over the weekend, and liked it. I watched it alone today. I actually snickered at some parts. The music was good, and I enjoyed the story line they created of Rapunzel. Definitely 5 stars, and thought consideration to buying it.

Movie Review : "Skyline"

After a wild night of partying with friends, Terry (Donald Faison) awakens to discover that he's one of the few remaining people on Earth. Banding together with a small group of survivors (Eric Balfour, Scottie Thompson, David Zayas, Brittany Daniel and Crystal Reed), Terry sets out to solve the mystery of what happened to the human race. Greg and Colin Strause (whose work includes the visual effects for Avatar and 300) direct. - taken from Netflix.com

This has got to be one of the worst sci-fi movies I have seen in quite some time. Aliens invade LA. Small group of 'friends' survive. Rest of movie is them getting picked off one by one. Girl and Guy have true love. Really bad acting. Really bad story line. One star.

Movie Review : "Thor"

Kenneth Branagh directs this Marvel Comics-inspired action flick about the thunder god Thor (Chris Hemsworth), a powerful warrior whose father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins) -- the king of Asgard -- forces him to live among humans on Earth and learn humility. Once there, he finds a friend (Natalie Portman), along with unexpected enemies sent from his world. Kat Dennings, Stellan SkarsgĂ„rd and Rene Russo co-star. - taken from Netflix.com

Oh wow! I took the boys to see this on Opening Day for the film. The theater wasn't crowded (4:30 show) so it was comfortable to sit back and watch. Freaking awesome! I enjoyed it alot.... of course, I enjoy the superhero movies - well, most of them. I thought it was pretty well adjusted for the screen, and the actors all were pretty good. Looking forward to the sort of follow-up film "The Avengers" due next year, that will have several of the heroes together in one film... Definitely deserved the 5 stars!

Movie Review : "Cloverfield"

A going-away party in Manhattan is interrupted when a mysterious monster of epic proportions launches an attack on New York City. With camcorder in hand, a small group of friends make their way out into the chaotic streets, scrambling to stay alive. Mike Vogel, Lizzy Caplan, Jessica Lucas, Michael Stahl-David, Odette Yustman and T.J. Miller star in this frenetic sci-fi thriller directed by Matt Reeves. - taken from Netflix.com

I remember first seeing the trailer for this. A really short one, that seemed to hardly show anything. It left me feeling wanting... wanting to know what was out there. Whoever did the trailer, did a pretty decent job. Then the movie came out, and the apparent masses of excited people to see what it really was came out of the theaters screaming for mercy. Not mercy as in fear, as in a wonderful horror movie; but for mercy from the hour and a half of sheer 'WTF was that?' . Made in 2007, I think released like January 2008 (I could be wrong) and many people I knew said to not waste my time watching this one, even on DVD. Heck, some said not to waste the time when it makes TV. My queue got slow, and low, so I put it in. Yeah, there are other stuff I could have re-watched that would have been better. Two stars, only because I did get to see what it was... no spoiler there..

Movie Review : "The Caveman's Valentine"

After finding a frozen corpse near his cave in a New York City park, homeless recluse Romulus Ledbetter (Samuel L. Jackson) -- a former piano prodigy beset by delusions of harmful rays bombarding him from the Chrysler Building -- suspects foul play and investigates. But can the schizophrenic Romulus pull himself together long enough to catch the killer? Featuring a brilliant turn by Jackson, this engrossing thriller also stars Colm Feore. - taken from Netflix.com

What can I say? I was bored. And this movie didn't help much. Plot was easy to figure out, and Samuel Jackson playing a crazy, homeless person? What's so different than his regular other roles? Oh yeah... they added some flashing lights and camera angles. Nothing changed otherwise. Loud tirades, expansive arm gestures. I thought of turning it off about halfway through, but decided to finish watching it. It still was boring.

Movie Review : "The King's Speech"

Britain's King George VI (Colin Firth) struggles with an embarrassing stutter for years until he seeks help from unorthodox Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) in this biographical drama that chalked up multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Logue's pioneering treatment and unlikely friendship give the royal leader a sense of confidence that serves him and his country well during the dark days of World War II. - taken from Netflix.com

Wow! I was really impressed with this movie. Not knowing the history of that time frame, especially in regards to the
UK, I found it really interesting. The movie deserves all the awards it has won, and then some! I felt Rush and Firth had played their roles excellently. Nothing more I can say about good stuff like this.... 5 stars.

Movie Review : "Hanna"

Hanna (Saoirse Ronan) is a teenager raised and trained by her father (Eric Bana), an ex-CIA operative, to become a highly skilled assassin. But when she's sent on a deadly mission across Europe, Hanna takes to an English family and starts longing for a normal life. She must first solve the puzzle of her mysterious past, however. Joe Wright (Atonement) directs this tense actioneer; Cate Blanchett also stars. - taken from Netflix.com

What can I say about this new release except it sucks ass. I have not seen a movie so bad that I want to leave the theater before we are halfway through it! I am only happy we were getting the early in the day ticket price ($5) so it could have been worse. Both my stepdad and I watched the trailers on the internet and thought it looked decent. The trailers was about all the action in the damn movie. We both walked out thinking, what was that? Story line sounds okay, but the actual film of it sucked. 1 star is a good rating for it....

Movie Review : "Stranger Than Fiction"

As best-selling novelist Kay Eiffel (Emma Thompson) struggles with how to kill off her main character, IRS auditor Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) begins hearing her voice in his head and slowly realizes that he must stop his own death. Crick's world turns upside down as he tries to persuade Kay to change the ending of her novel, all while getting closer to a quirky baker (Maggie Gyllenhaal) he's auditing. Dustin Hoffman and Queen Latifah co-star. - taken from Netflix.com

I have said it before, I am not a Wil Ferrell fan at all. Though, I will say I did enjoy somewhat this film with him as a main character lead. I enjoyed Dustin Hoffman's role as well. A simple story that was worth the hour and a half to watch...once. Three stars, and a nod to my thinking this may be the best Ferrell role I have seen.

Movie Review : "Hereafter"

Clint Eastwood directs this supernatural thriller about three very different people and their responses to death, including a hesitant American psychic named George (Matt Damon) who may be able to help the others find answers and peace. Marie (CĂ©cile De France) is a French journalist caught up in the aftereffects of the devastating 2004 tsunami, while in London, young Marcus (Frankie and George McLaren) seeks to contact his deceased twin brother. - taken from Netflix.com

I have always been a big Eastwood fan, and his movies as a director have always been a good one for me to watch. This one was no exception. About a third of the way through, I thought I might get lost in the French speaking portion (with English subtitles) but I stayed solid, and it was worth it. I admit, I even got a bit teary-eyed near the end. A great flick, I do believe I could sit through again with no qualms. Eastwood has earned another 5 stars.

Movie Review : "Hot Tub Time Machine"

Fueled by energy drinks, vodka and nostalgia for their younger, wilder days, a group of aging best friends travels back in time to 1986, where they get the chance to relive the best year of their lives. And their time machine? Well, it's a hot tub. John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke, Crispin Glover and Sebastian Stan co-star in this out-of-the-box comedy that takes time travel to a whole new level. - taken from Netflix.com

Yeah, you know it is probably like one of those sex/comedy movies, and it is. Cheap and easy, slow on laughs, predictable..... yeah. Has a few stars names that you can recognize (Glover - from 'Back to the Future') the rest of the story line is pure ass-stupidity. Really. Though, there were some gratuitous scenes of breasts, and hot looking girls.... 2 stars... and they both go to those hot sexy women.

Movie Review : "Faster"

On the very day he's released from a 10-year prison sentence, convicted bank robber Driver (Dwayne Johnson) hits the streets to take revenge on the men who bungled the job that got him busted and his beloved brother killed. But close on Driver's tail are a driven cop (Billy Bob Thornton) on the one hand and a flamboyant contract killer (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) on the other. George Tillman Jr. directs this thriller that also stars Carla Gugino. - taken from Netflix.com

I have seen pretty much most of the Rock's movies, and actually kind of enjoyed them. The action is usually pretty good, even if the story line has been done before (ie. "Walking Tall" with a twist). This was no exception. Lots of good shoot 'em up action, car chasing, decent story...though I had it figured out early - just left me more time to enjoy the action. The Rock still looks buffer than ever in this flick, and meaner than hell. 4 stars

Movie Review : "Johnny English"

There's a Frenchman after the crown jewels and the throne itself -- but not to worry, Johnny English (Rowan Atkinson) is on the case. Well, actually ... maybe a little worrying isn't out of order, considering how clumsy Johnny can be! Luckily, his zeal more than makes up for his bumbling manner. Let's hope that can help solve the crime of the century; if not, love in the form of double agent Lorna Campbell (Natalie Imbruglia) might - taken from Netflix.com

Oh geez. Yeah, it was that bad. I had seen recently a trailer for the 2nd film of this character called "Johnny English Reborn" and surprisingly, it looked humorous enough, I thought I should go back and watch this one. Yeah, waste of my time. Easy humor to know what is going on, though Natalie Imbruglia was in it, it sucked. 2 Stars.

Movie Review : "Waiting For 'Superman'"

Dynamic documentarian Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) weaves together the stories of students, families, educators and reformers to shed light on the failing public school system and its consequences on the future of the United States. In this Sundance Audience Award winner for Best Documentary, Guggenheim deftly examines the options to improve public education and provide America's teachers and students with the help they need. - taken from Netflix.com

This was sort of an eye-opener. Though society, and myself, see Education as a whole for our country as deteriorating, this documentary brings it into closer focus. It is worse than that. I felt it was put together very well, though a bit centered on what many consider to be low-income/poverty areas. A few of the ideas I could see being applied even to just regular public schooling (the bad teachers, tenure, etc). Though the film tried to state that this is occurring in almost all school districts, they focused it in highly populated, lower urban areas on both coasts (NYC and LA) and threw in a couple other places for a supposed equal comparison (Wash., DC, and the Silicon Valley area of CA). Much emphasis was put on the lotteries certain schools (not considered regular public schools) use to fill slots available when there are more applicants than slots.

As I said, though the film does appear to mention several theories of how the education system can change, and other problematic issues occurring based on governmental control (on all levels), there is obviously nothing that has been corrected. One short piece centered around how dramatically one 'type' of charter-type school made changes, and was able to produce the results in an additional 80-some odd places, but again they were all low income urban settings.

Overall somewhat informative, though depressing, I give it 3 stars.

Movie Review : "Lady in the Water"

When apartment building manager Cleveland Heep (Paul Giamatti) discovers a water nymph (Bryce Dallas Howard) residing in the complex's swimming pool, he rearranges his life to help her return to her mythical home. But if he fails, it may mean the end for her world -- and for his. Helmed by Oscar-nominated director M. Night Shyamalan, this unconventional bedtime story was first conceived as a fable for his children. - taken from Netflix.com

I had forgotten this one was in my queue until it showed up. Otherwise, I would have just taken it out. Shyamalan is not on the top of good directors list I have here after that last one of his I watched. Either way, I went forward and hit play for this one. I tried to follow it, like it was possible to see how an adult would be telling this as a fable at bedtime, or some such. It was a bit complicated and long to be one of those types of stories, though I did actually find myself enjoying portions of it. Giamatti has done several roles that I liked him in, and plays this one very well. The basic story is consistent, but as it seemed to build into more characters, I started to lose interest. Overall, I felt it was a bit long, and dry in dialogue. I will give notice though, being based as a story for children, it is allowed to almost come to an end "...and then..." with story fluctuation. Three stars.

Movie Review : "The Social Network"

Director David Fincher's biographical drama chronicles the meteoric rise of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) from Harvard sophomore to Internet superstar, examining his relationships with co-founder Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield) and Napster founder Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake). Winning Golden Globes for Best Picture and Best Director, the film also racked up Oscar nods in the same categories and for lead actor Eisenberg. - taken from Netflix.com

I actually enjoyed this film. So many of my friends were saying that they just had no interest in the 'story of FACEBOOK', and I admit, I wasn't too thrilled about it either. But I did find it interesting after watching it. I actually caught myself cheering on Zuckerman... they filmed it in such a way, one could almost NOT cheer him on. Of course, with it being valued at $500 billion (at that time) I don't think I would want to film it in agreement against his side of things... that could be costly somewhere in that person's life.... 4 stars... it kept my interest and I enjoyed it.

Movie Review : "The Snow Walker"

Barry Pepper stars in this survivalist adventure as cocky, hotheaded bush pilot Charlie Halliday, who agrees to transport a critically ill Inuit woman (Annabella Piugattuk) to a Yellowknife hospital during a routine stop on a supply run. The pair face dire consequences when their plane goes down in the Arctic tundra, leaving them marooned -- and facing the brutality of the looming northern winter. - taken from Netflix.com

Typical survival story that wasn't so bad. This particular taking place in the Arctic. I was surprised, people died. It was okay sitting the hour and half through it. Berry Pepper has been in quite a few movies and this one I thought he didn't do too bad in. I give it 3 stars.

Movie Review : Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog"

When he's not busy breaking the law or trying to get close to his secret crush, Penny (Felicia Day), supervillain wannabe Dr. Horrible (Neil Patrick Harris) boasts about his exploits via his Internet video blog and dreams of defeating his nemesis, Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion). Conceived during the 2008 Hollywood writers' strike, Joss Whedon's quirky musical comedy originally debuted as an online miniseries. - taken from Netflix.com

This rocked! It was originally aired as 8 separate video-type blog posts on the internet (I read somewhere) as the desc. says back in the writers strike time frame. It is just funny, and corny, and I actually really enjoyed the soundtrack as well. In fact, I loaded it into itunes for me. This is one I would like to find at the video store to buy on dvd to watch whenever I want. 5 stars is too low a rating for it.

TV Show Review : "Las Vegas: Season 1"

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but for the detectives who keep so-called sinners from preying on the innocent at Sin City's posh Montecito Resort & Casino, the secrets and lies are as insidious as any other poison. It's up to ex-CIA agent Big Ed Deline (James Caan) and his second in command, Danny McCoy (Josh Duhamel), to rein in the cheaters and thieves -- if they can -- in this exciting first season of the NBC series. - taken from Netflix.com

Okay, I admit it. This is where some of my movie viewing time has been going recently. So I finished the whole first season, and really enjoyed it for being dated in the early 2000's. Though Vegas is close to me, distance-wise, just the basic storylines for a one hour show were decent. And some of the chicks are hot...or were then. Caan is a good actor I like, too. I give it 5 stars, and will start watching season 2 soon.

Movie Review : "Special"

Enrolling in a drug study to spice up his humdrum life as a low-paid meter reader, Les Franken (Michael Rapaport) begins taking an experimental antidepressant, which proves to have a few unexpected side effects. Convinced that he's actually developing special powers that can be used to fight evil, Les decides to quit his day job and focus on being a superhero … despite his doctor's professional opinion that his abilities are all in his mind. - taken from Netflix.com

I picked this for an Instant Play - I think it was because I was 'in between' on movies showing up...and it had gotten some higher viewer ratings. Figured maybe I would check it out. Yeah, I watched it. It wasn't spectacular. Simple story of how doing one of them drug studies you hear about all the time, can go wrong.... and just by chance, the side effects make you do stuff that actually are nice for society, though done in the wrong way (vigilante justice). Indie film... low budget... no major big names. I was okay with it... 2 stars.

Movie Review : "Devil"

In this edgy thriller, Det. Bowden (Chris Messina) must not only save five people trapped in an elevator -- a mechanic (Logan Marshall-Green), a young woman (Bojana Novakovic), an old woman (Jenny O'Hara), a guard (Bokeem Woodbine) and a salesman (Geoffrey Arend) -- but he must act fast because the devil is among them. Drew Dowdle and John Erick Dowdle direct M. Night Shyamalan's story, which explores the notion that there are no coincidences. - taken from Netflix.com

Shyamalan directed this... should of known it would suck. I sat down thinking this would be a nice little thriller/horror ind of flick..... but no. I think the only part I liked was the idea that 'there are no coincidences'. One star is being nice.

Movie Review : "Salt"

After she's accused of being a Russian sleeper spy, rogue CIA agent EvelynSalt (Angelina Jolie) goes on the run, using every tactic, accent and disguise she knows to elude her pursuers, clear her name and protect her husband. Her supervisor, Winter (Liev Schreiber), buys her story, while counterintelligence officer Peabody (Chiwetel Ejiofor) decidedly does not and will do anything to stop her in this fast-paced, intrigue-filled spy adventure. - taken from Netflix.com

The story and action through this movie eluded me most of the way, so I enjoyed it a bit more. There was a good bit of action interspersed with bits and pieces of what was going on. Liev... damn, he played a good role in this flick! I usually am a bit of a horndog for Jolie as a rule, but I just couldn't get there for this role. She appears so ... robotic (I don't think it all was part of the role, though some of it needed to be) and I just got a bad taste in my mouth. Kind of how I went sour with her in "Changling" though she was more anorexic looking in that one. Liev saved it though, so I give it 4 stars.

Movie Review : "Alpha and Omega"

When park rangers capture ambitious, head-of-the-pack wolf pup Kate (Hayden Panettiere) and happy-go-lucky wolf pup Humphrey (Justin Long), the two wind up in a strange land hundreds of miles from home and must find their way back. As they battle bears, porcupines and each other on their journey, they discover they're falling in love. This animated film also features the voices of Christina Ricci and Dennis Hopper. - taken from Netflix.com

This has got to be the worst cartoon/animation type film I have seen in years. The storyline wasn't that great, and the only laughs I got were from the duck and goose. Yeah, some well named actors loaned their voice talents, and I think Hopper had passed during the process or shortly after (I seem to recall there was a dedication somewhere in there for him for the film). Definitely BAH! Though, my kids seemed to enjoy it, but one of them did say it was stupid... rating is 1 star.

Movie Review : "Resident Evil: Afterlife"

The Undead Apocalypse continues unabated as super-soldier Alice (Milla Jovovich) finds her way to a supposed sanctuary in Los Angeles, which may just be a deadly trap set for her by the ruthless Umbrella Corporation. The fourth film in Paul W.S. Anderson's blood-soaked saga finds Alice teaming up with Claire (Ali Larter) and Chris (Wentworth Miller) and a handful of stragglers to save what's left of humanity. - taken from Netflix.com

I have been a decent fan of the 'Resident Evil' movies, not the video games though. I just really never played the game, I will admit though. Milla Jovovich has been pretty sexy for me ever since the first of this series (even 'The Fifth Element') and I have watched all of them, even bought the first three. And the soundtracks ROCK! I will admit though, I am starting to get a bit stretched with the storyline. It was good through 3 movies, and in my badly worded opinion, the 4th was a bit far. With this Fifth installment, it goes even more out there. The little clip after the end credits was a  nice hanger though, and leaves yet an opening for another movie.... and I have seen rumor on the 'Net that it is in the works. It earned 5 stars for Jovovich and the other pretty girls, and a rockin soundtrack... and the action/special fx were good too.

Movie Review : "Megamind"

When a cunning supervillain (voiced by Will Ferrell) accidently kills his crime-fighting nemesis, the rogue suddenly finds life boring and uninspired. So, he creates a new enemy (Jonah Hill) who seeks to destroy the world, forcing Megamind to play the hero role for once in his life. This hilarious 3D animated feature from director Tom McGrath (Madagascar) also features the voices of Brad Pitt and Tina Fey. - taken from Netflix.com

I have enjoyed many cartoon/computer animation flicks over the years, but seemingly, the newer ones recently have been pretty lame. This one was no exception. It ranked there with 'Despicable Me'. Maybe I just cannot stand Wil Ferrell, or his voice even. I don't recall any laughing from me, and not many from the kids either. The kids would watch it again, so I give it 3 stars for lasting value when I need them out of my hair.

Movie Review : "Disturbia"

In this modern retelling of Hitchcock's thriller Rear Window, Kale (Shia LaBeouf), a troubled teen sentenced to house arrest, begins watching his neighbors out of boredom -- only to discover evidence that a serial killer lives a stone's throw from his home. As his suspicions of his neighbor (David Morse) grow, Kale enlists the aid of friends Ashley (Sarah Roemer) and Ronnie (Aaron Yoo) in his increasingly dangerous snooping. - taken from Netflix.com

Okay, the description tells the best story. This movie sucked. I thought, even being a type of remake, but a Hitchcock film, it might still be interesting. But it wasn't. Morse has done well playing small parts as bad guy, and does well in this one too. Though I do admit, Roemer wasn't too bad looking in some of the scenes, though appears too young to be sexy (this is a HS role). I am being nice with 2 stars. Again Shia Lebouf can't act.

Movie Review : "Machete"

2010 R 105 minutes
Hired to assassinate a politician, vigilante and ex-Federale Machete (Danny Trejo) nearly dies when a sniper shoots him during the job. Out for revenge, he's joined by a reluctant old buddy (Cheech Marin) who's become a pacifist priest. Written and co-directed by Robert Rodriguez, this homage to exploitation films based on his fake trailer in Grindhouse co-stars Robert De Niro, Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba and Steven Seagal. - taken from Netflix.com

OMG! I had waited a few years for this one. I cannot remember where it started, but the original idea was used as a fake movie trailer at the start of some movie made similar to the 70's type R flicks. It was 'Grindhouse' by
Tarantino. Either way, I guess so many people liked it, that they idea got worked further along and they actually made it into a movie. I like Danny Trejo roles anyways. He always plays a badass. And being in the same style as many 70's B flicks you would see at the drive-ins.... just made it better. I was a bit surprised at the cast (I  hadn't looked before I watched it) but included some big names as well. I gave it 5 stars.

Movie Review : "Red"

2010 PG-13 111 minutes
After trading in his professional past as a black-ops CIA operative for a new identity, Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) is basking in normality. But he's forced to return to old habits when an assassin puts a target on his back and goes after the woman (Mary-Louise Parker) he loves. Helen Mirren and John Malkovich co-star as former members of Frank's team who reluctantly reassemble to save his life in this Golden Globe-nominated action-comedy. - taken from Netflix.com

Nothing like seeing a movie with aging stars in it.... again. I think the first time I saw one with this type of cast, was 'The Expendables' and even though this was a small bit different storyline, the action and aging stars were common. John Malkovich 's character was by far the best I feel, but I am a bit partial to him. Willis always is good  in an action flick, only because it has has speaking lines needed for his role. Parker I felt fit her role as a Mid-American person, and in some scenes looked somewhat sexy, and in others somewhat frumpy. I good girl next door kinda thing. I gave it 4 stars, as I chuckled at some of the dialogue, and the fact that it had several aging stars doing their best in an action flick.

Movie Review : "Unknown"

2006 NR 92 minutes
A seemingly disparate group of men awake together in a locked-down warehouse in the middle of the desert with no knowledge of who they are or how they ended up in their present situation. Despite their shared amnesia, the men must work together to figure out who's who in order to avoid execution. Director Simon Brand weaves this tension-filled thriller that's elevated by a seasoned cast of actors including Greg Kinnear and Joe Pantoliano. - taken from Netflix.com

I was a bit let down with this one. Before we were even well into the movie, I had most of it figured out. Though there was one small part it took to the end of the movie to find out. It was nice to see some smaller actors in this movie... some I recognized not so much by name, but other shows/movies they are in. Like Bobby from 'Sons of Anarchy', and Bridget Moynahan (sp?) who plays in 'Blue Bloods'. Since I sat through most of it pretty bored, I give it 2 stars.

Oops!

I been lax about posting my reviews.... I will try to remember all the stuff I have watched and get some new posts in here tonight....

Movie Review : "Fat Head"

While most people saw the documentary 'Super Size Me' as an exposĂ© of the fast food industry, comedian and former health writer Tom Naughton saw it as a dare: He'd show that you could lose weight on a diet of burgers and fries. In addition to chronicling Naughton's weight drop, the film provides interviews with doctors, nutritionists and others to drive home his thesis that most of what we know about "healthy eating" is wrong. - taken from Netflix.com

All I can say is... wow. I never saw 'Super Size' me as it reminded me too much of that moron Michael Moore, whom I cannot stand. This movie actually supported my thought. Not only did I learn more true facts regarding foods and diet, it was nice to see so much shit be brought to the viewer's attention. So much of society accepts crap without any proof, and just this topic reveals just how bad we are nowadays. Definitely making adjustments to my diet starting tomorrow. Five stars for this one! And lots of recommendations.

Movie Review : "G.I. Jane"

Ridley Scott directs this intense look at Lt. Jordan O'Neil (Demi Moore), a Navy topographer chosen as a litmus test for women in combat. O'Neil trains with the elite but punishing Navy SEALs -- and with a 60% dropout rate, no one expects her to succeed. But the steely-nerved and tightly muscled O'Neil attempts to prove everyone wrong. Viggo Mortensen co-stars as a crusty instructor who dishes out the grueling training regime. - taken from Netflix.com

Another great Ridley Scott film. Came out in 1997, but still pretty good. Demi Moore is still damn good looking at that time. Four stars for basic storyline.

Movie Review : "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward ..."

"The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford"
After Robert Ford (Casey Affleck, in an Oscar-nominated role) joins the most notorious gang in the West, he grows tired of the charismatic Jesse James (Brad Pitt) and begins to resent his widespread fame. But by hatching a scheme to gun down James, Ford risks forever being branded a coward. Sam Shepard, Sam Rockwell, Mary-Louise Parker and Michael Parks also star in this big-screen adaptation of Ron Hansen's acclaimed historical fiction novel. - from Netflix.com

Wow. This movie was a little over 2 1/2 hours of damn good western. Many boys that played cowboys and indians heard of Jesse James, and other famous gunslingers. I was not alone. Though I don't recall much of the actual history of the James Gang, or of Frank and Jesse, this movie provided on hell of a good variation of his assassination. I could see where Affleck got the Oscar nomination, and am somewhat surprised if it did not win that year. All I can say is 5 stars, and Wow! I enjoyed this movie immensely!

Movie Review : "Inception"

Oscar-nominated for Best Picture, this unnerving sci-fi thriller stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Dom Cobb, who earns a tidy sum infiltrating the dreams of corporate titans to steal their most closely held secrets. Tapped by a rich industrialist (Ken Watanabe) for a job involving a rival's heir, Cobb marshals a team of specialists that includes his right-hand man (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), an architecture student (Ellen Page) and a chemist (Dileep Rao). - from Netflix.com

I will be honest. I do not care for DiCapprio. I think all the hype he got when he was first starting out really ruined it for me. And I don't analyze actors and their roles to say, oh he is good so he deserves an Oscar or whatever.... Either way, I got the impression that this film was supposed to be really good. Heck, in the description it says Oscar-nominated. I will admit, it as better than I thought it would be, but overall it wasn't Oscar worthy... though, I will say my definition of that is beyond my understanding. Three solid stars.

Movie Review : "Get Low"

Oscar winners Robert Duvall and Sissy Spacek team up to tell the true story of irascible Felix Bush, a backwoods Tennessee loner who planned his funeral in 1938 while he was still around to attend -- and enjoy -- the proceedings. Director Aaron Schneider's deft blend of dark humor and poignancy also stars Bill Murray as Frank Quinn, the huckster owner of a failing funeral home, and Lucas Black as his dubious assistant. - taken from Netflix.com

I remember reading about the making of this movie, and how it was to be based on a true story. I don't know how factual it is, but it made for a good afternoon movie. Robert Duvall pulls off a wonderful role as Felix Bush, and in my opinion, made the whole film. Bill Murray plays a nice shifty, salesman-type of guy as the funeral director, which fits him as well. DEfinitely a 4 star film.

Movie Review : "The A-Team"

This updated feature-film take on the hit 1980s television show follows a group of Iraq War veterans on the run from U.S. military forces while they try to clear their names after being framed for a crime they didn't commit. Along the way, Col. Hannibal Smith, Capt. H.M. "Howling Mad" Murdock , Sgt. Bosco "B.A." Baracus and Lt. Templeton "Faceman" Peck help out various people they encounter. Joe Carnahan directs this high-octane actioner. -taken from Netflix.com

I felt disappointed as I started this film. Having Grown up watching the original TV series, and really being into the whole thing in those years, knowing they had made an attempt to capture that '80s feeling and modernize the whole series into a 2 hour movie... I just didn't see it happening, and felt that way. I tried to be open about it though, and tried to watch it like the first time seeing of this show. It worked. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I was "Eh." at the beginning, as they created the storyline of how they got in a group, but I liked where they went after that. Truly, unrealistic, nothing but action-packed and explosions throughout!! What guy wouldn't like this one??!! Though I was so stuck on about how the original cast would not be able to be replicated, in a way, they weren't. The base idealism of the character was there, but I think they added a bit more to them. My boys haven't watched it yet, but I know they will enjoy it too. I give it a high 4 stars!

Movie Review : "Chaos Theory"

Thanks to a strict regimen of timetables, to-do lists and index cards, efficiency expert Frank Allen (Ryan Reynolds) lives his life exactly how he wants it. That is, until his well-meaning wife (Emily Mortimer) decides to set their clock back a mere 10 minutes. Suddenly, Frank's once-safe and predictable life is spinning dangerously out of control … which is the one thing he never bothered to plan for. Stuart Townsend and Sarah Chalke co-star. - taken from Netflix.com

Reynolds has been around awhile, mostly in the teenage/college roles in sleazy off-color type R-rated movies about guys chasing girls with big boobs (at least in my memory). Though one of his better roles was from the X-men: wolverine movie.... Either way, he portrays a decent role here. I actually was wondering when this movie would get more assinine, but it really didn't, though I felt it was a bit more extreme than real life could be. Kept my attention, got a few laughs, would say it is worth at least a viewing. Three solid stars.

Movie Review : "Eat Pray Love"

Julia Roberts stars in this adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert's best-selling memoir about coping with a depressing divorce. After deciding to reshape her life, Liz (Roberts) travels the world in search of direction. She heads to Italy, India and Bali, indulging in delicious cuisine while seeking the true meaning of self-love, family, friendship and forgiveness. Along the way, she meets a bevy of characters and, possibly, her true love. - taken from Netlflix.com

I had asked for all my contacts on Facebook, to let me know what they would about this movie prior to watching it. To me, I basically got the idea that it was a 'chick flick' form commercials/trailers I had seen, and how it was based on a book (that women seemed to rave about). Many friends/family stated they enjoyed, and some included that their husbands, I guess I read it as, 'tolerated' the movie as their wives wanted to see it. I sat down and watched it alone, as my wife said she had no idea what it was about even, and though she did not voice it, I got the impression she could care less about seeing it. I will recommend she see it before I return it.

I enjoyed this movie. Yes, definitely a Romantic Drama type movie, but not the sappy crap moist guys expect. I admit it, I got my heart strings tugged a teensy. What I liked best about the movie was an embracing of the cultures throughout, and the self-learnings the main character received. I think Julia Roberts was fantastic in this role, as so many of her more mature roles lately, show her to be. "Pretty Woman" ain't got nothing on this! I give it a very high 4 stars!

Movie Review : "Land of the Lost"

After accidentally uncovering a portal to an alternate universe peopled with dinosaurs, Sleestaks and other strange creatures, Dr. Rick Marshall (Will Ferrell) and two associates are forced to navigate a dangerous new world. Brad Silberling directs this big-screen adaptation of the classic 1970s adventure series "Land of the Lost," the high-concept, low-budget fantasy dreamed up by famed children's television producers Sid and Marty Krofft. - taken from Netflix.com

Oh geez. Okay, we can say this is the typical Will Ferrell type comedy. Sexual innuendos throughout, 'dumb people' portrayals, all rolled into what as a kid I used to love to watch on Saturday mornings. Some of Ferrell's movies I have enjoyed ("Elf" comes to mind) but I just could not get into the somewhat raunchy remake of this show. One star all the way, and I feel that was being generous.

Movie Review : "The Fountain"

In this sci-fi drama that spans a millennium, a man (Hugh Jackman) searches for a tree believed to grant eternal life in 16th-century Spain; seeks a cure for his wife's (Rachel Weisz) cancer as a present-day scientist; and traverses the universe as a 26th-century astronaut. As he travels through time in an epic struggle to save the woman he loves, he also comes to understand some of life's murkiest mysteries. - taken from Netflix.com

This was another weird one. One of Jackman's earlier films than Xmen. I got a few sympathetic eye waterings as the story went along, but overall was pretty let down about the whole movie. Sort of seemed like a thought based on ancient Mayan beliefs of afterlife and a good dose of some damn good hallucinogenics. Eitehr way, I never understood the mysteries he was supposed to solve as they say in the description. Or maybe I am just dense. Three stars for at least keeping my interest.

Book Review : "Sun Stand Still" by Steven Furtick

This is definitely a book a follower of God would want to read. Steven  Furtick writes not only in an inspiring way, but to motivate you to be more full in your Faith. This is not a book for someone learning to follow God's word. As basically an Agnostic, I had a difficult time reading this book. This was something I had no desire to read, but in putting my best foot forward I opened its pages. Unfortunately, I got about halfway through, and began to skim more of the material than actually read it. As I said, for a Christian, this would be a great book to help one grow in their Faith, and motivate one to let God live through them more. I won't rate this one as I never fully read it.

Book Review : "Crush" by Alan Jacobson

F Publisromhers Weekly

In Jacobson's addictive second Karen Vail thriller (after The 7th Victim), a serial killer spoils the FBI profiler's romantic Napa Valley vacation with boyfriend Det. Robby Hernandez. During a Silver Ridge Estates winery tour, Karen and Robby stumble over the strangled and mutilated corpse of Victoria Cameron, daughter of an influential winemaker. The narcissistic psycho responsible? John Wayne Mayfield (aka the Napa Crush Killer), who taunts the Napa County Major Crimes Task Force formed to catch him. As more victims are found, their windpipes crushed and bodies inflicted with postmortem wounds, the motive behind such a killing spree appears connected to conflicts within the Georges Valley American Viticultural Area board. Jacobson jolts standard serial killer fare with some twists concerning the publicity-hungry Crush Killer and insightful peeks into California's wine industry. The action culminates in a shockeroo cliffhanger. (Sept.)

This was a free ebook I got on my Kindle. I had not really read the book description when I downloaded it, but after reading just the first bit, I realized this was a second book. Still a stand-alone, but if you read the first of the main character, it helps a bit. Jacobson's Karen Vail is an FBI profiler, and this takes off after the first book, which I really enjoyed as well. Well written with a few surprises as the story unwinds, taking you from what you think is the end (at the halfway mark no less). Definitely another book is in the works, and I anxiously await it. Five stars for this read!

Movie Review : "Exam"

In this psychological thriller, eight job applicants in a guarded, windowless room are given instruction, exams and 80 minutes to answer one discerning question that may win them a prime position. But they soon discover this is no ordinary test. The exams are blank. With one ejected for attempting to answer the unknown question, the remaining seven must decide what they will do and how far each will go for the coveted job. - taken from Netflix.com

Considering I had never heard of this movie, tough was made in 2008, with a cast of people I had no clue who they were, I really expected a flop. By halfway through, I had figured it all out, and I was tempted to just quit watching. However, by chance, some random event took place that snagged my attention back, and made me re-think what I had thought. I have no idea if it was planned that way, or just as they figured one would get bored watching it... but it worked. The ending does resolve some issues brought up during the movie, but I won't say how. I give it 4 stars.

Movie Review : "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo"

Journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and rebellious computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) team up to investigate the unsolved disappearance of wealthy Henrik Vanger's (Sven-Bertil Taube) teen niece (Ewa Fröling), only to uncover dark secrets about Vanger's powerful family. Niels Arden Oplev directs this Swedish thriller based on the first novel from Stieg Larsson's best-selling trilogy. - taken from Netflix.com

I waited awhile to see this one. I had read the book last summer (after it had come out in paperback) and had really enjoyed the story. When I heard that there was a foreign film of it, I was a bit excited, until I found out the English was in subtitles. Yeah, I know. However, I did love "Amelie" which was the same way... Anyhow, I finally ot around to watching it. Aside from the differences that a movie based on a book brings (obviously not as much detail as the book) it was a great movie. The Swedish Film Assoc (or whatever they are called) did a wonderful job. Of course the Author Larsson is from that area of Europe, too. Since it is a foreign film, there are a few, uh, sexually dramatic, scenes, that I would definitely not suggest this as a family film. I give it 5 stars, and look forward to seeing the next two movies in the series... even though I have not read the books yet.

Movie Review : "World's Greatest Dad"

After his son (Daryl Sabara) dies in an awkward freak accident, high school poetry teacher Lance (Robin Williams) ghostwrites a suicide note to spare the family embarrassment. But when the note becomes an unexpected hit, Lance sees a chance to resurrect his writing career. In a bid for literary fame, Lance writes his son's journal and passes it off as his own. Writer-director Bob Goldthwait's comedy debuted at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. - taken from Netflix.com

I watched this one on a whim, as it stars Robin Williams, and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait. I was expecting a bit more comedy, more than the content that it is about. I was definitely glad I didn't watch this one with my boys though. Maybe if they were older teens, but not at their ages now. Language, sexual content (though no actual major porn) are rampant throughout.
A teen son, who is a loner and a freak, of a single dad, who is a multiple publisher denied writer, dies accidently in while masturbating. The dad (played by Robin Williams) sets it up to look like a regular suicide, and pens a note. Kids at the school get a copy of the note, and it builds to where the Dad creates a journal his son supposedly wrote, which get published and fame starts to build. It all comes to a head... but I won't share that part.
I really started to hate this movie about halfway through. The start was slow, and once the son was dead, I felt disgusted inside by everyone's reactions, including the actions of the father. The end was easy to figure out, and was okay. I give it 2 stars, and don't watch it for a family flick.

Movie Review : "Despicable Me"

Villainous Gru (Steve Carell) lives up to his reputation as a despicable, deplorable and downright unlikable guy when he hatches a plan to steal the moon from the sky. But he has a tough time staying on task after three orphans land in his care. Julie Andrews voices the role of Gru's malevolent mom, and Jason Segel, Kristen Wiig and Will Arnett round out the ensemble cast in this comic tale that earned a Golden Globe nod for Best Animated Feature. - taken from netflix.com

I was a bit excited when this arrived in the mail today! I had been awaiting it for it had come out in theaters. Needless to say, I was a bit let-down. Most of the funny parts were used in the TV spots that were run, or other trailer stuff. I actually almost fell asleep during the movie. Even for a family animation movie, I was disappointed. I do give it three stars though, as I know my kids will love it for the minions, and just being an animated flick.

Movie Review : "Dominion:Prequel to the Exorcist"

Years before exorcising the devil from Regan MacNeil, Father Merrin (Stellan SkarsgÄrd) experiences a crisis of faith, leaves the priesthood and heads to Africa on an archaeological expedition, where he unearths a perfectly preserved ancient church. The mysterious church, horrific events and the healing of a crippled boy (Billy Crawford) soon draw Merrin into a battle against pure evil in this creepy prequel to the 1973 horror classic. - taken from Netflix.com

I am not big into Horror films, but sometimes I enjoy one. Tonight, this was the best I could find in the instant play queue. It has been years since I have seen "The Exorcist" so some of that story is not coming to mind, though this film obviously did not have much to do with the original. Keeping in mind the whole story was more of a mind-set for the next one, it wasn't terrible. Events as they played out were pretty predictable, and there weren't as many scenes to make one jump at the action. Very low budget and few special effects. I felt it was more of a whole man and God thing than Man of God fighting Evil. Enjoyed the theme more than the movie. I give it 2 stars, well, I'll bump it to 3 just because from what I remember, it could have been the start of the mindset for Father Merrin in the original. Besides, I thought this might be an earlier movie for Skarsgard.

Movie Review : "The Parking Lot Movie"

Over the course of three years, filmmaker Meghan Eckman tracked thecomings and goings of a solitary parking lot in Charlottesville, Va., chroniclingthe lives of the attendants who were working there. This inspiring documentary is the result. Hanging tough as they navigate the range of human emotion -- from hope to frustration, from a sense of limitless possibilities to stagnation --the film's subjects embody the pursuit of the American Dream. - taken from Netflix.com

What can I say about this one? Not much. I watched it on recommendation from some friends, who apparently understood it better than I. Maybe my lack of Sociology  classes, or anthropology, or some college in general ruined it for me. Basically and Indie documentary about guys that worked at a particular parking lot. Most were some sort of undergraduate student, in some humanities course and try to spout life altering snippets about life as a parking lot attendant. Maybe that's why I don't get it. Worse movie rating so far.... 1 star.

Movie Review : "Predators"

Rugged mercenary Royce (Adrien Brody) inherits command of an elite team of human fighters -- including dorky-but-dangerous Edwin (Topher Grace) and tough-but-beautiful Isabelle (Alice Braga) -- as they are hunted by a race of ruthless alien trackers known as Predators. Director NimrĂłd Antal's sci-fi action explosion, which also stars Laurence Fishburne and an uzi-toting Danny Trejo, is a direct sequel to the 1987 blockbuster Predator. - taken from Netflix.com

This is like, what.... Fourth movie in this line? There was "Predator" with Schwarzeneggar; "Predator II" with Danny Glover; "AVP:Alien vs Predator" and "Alien vs Predator : Requiem". So I guess that makes the 5th film. Either way, it kind of goes back to the first original movie. About 8 (or so) humans from Earth awaken while in free fall, to land on what they determine later, is an alien planet. Each of them was selected for a reason, and the movie is spent them 'discovering' why each of them is there, as they are hunted by the Predators. At one point there is reference to the first movie in this series, which I thought was nice, since the last couple weren't even related it seems. Of course, Netflix description states it is a direct sequel to the first one. Overall, I found it a bit boring, and was not happy about the two bigger-named actors being killed off, but that happens. I give it 3 starts, since it at least kept me watching to see how it would end.

Movie Review : "Twilight Saga: Eclipse"

Danger stalks Seattle with a rash of mysterious killings that have Bella (Kristen Stewart) feeling less secure than ever in the third installment of this teen fantasy series based on the best-selling books by Stephenie Meyer. With a malevolent vampire continuing her quest for revenge from the sidelines, the human Bella must reconcile her love for Edward (Robert Pattinson), a vampire, and her growing feelings for Jacob (Taylor Lautner), a werewolf. - taken from Netflix.com

This is the third installment of the 4 book series written by Stephanie Meyers. As many readers would say, usually the middle portion of any series of books, tends to be a bit boring, and drags along. This movie was no exception. Though I had read the complete series long before any movie was going to be made, and evidently, those year made a difference, as I could not really place what seemed to happen in this one as being part of the story, except a few bits of the whole plot. Honestly, the teenage clamor surrounding this whole series has probably jaded me for the movie experience. I do give some credit though tot he author, because at the time, it is getting younger readers to pick a book up, if only to find out how it all ends, prior to the release of the final book-to-movie. All in all, I give it 3 stars.

Book Review : "Divine Appointments" by Charlene Ann Baumbich

This story revolves around 4 central characters and their interactions over mostly the span of a few weeks. Each of them could be any person one would meet on the street. It follows them individually and together as they interact and react to situations. The mysterious way that God works in our lives is reflected in small ways that the author has placed in a seemingly benign way in this story. Follow the lives of Josie, an independent, go-forward consultant, as she finds a mysterious snow globe and how its scene encourages her to open herself; Lyle, his job loss and remorse of a missed loved life drive him to go back to an earlier time of his life where he felt what he did was something good. Marsha, who learns how friends can change you, and changes of the heart; and Barb, as she allows God to use her to encourage others, and how one sacrifice can change the world like the wind from the wings of a butterfly. For a Christian book, I enjoyed reading it and give it 4 stars.

Movie Review : "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"

While Horvath (Alfred Molina) and Drake (Toby Kebbell) plot to restore Morgana Le Fay (Alice Krige) to power, master sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) makes physics student Dave Stutle (Jay Baruchel) his apprentice, teaching him enough magic to save the world from sure ruin. Also featuring Monica Bellucci, Teresa Palmer and Toby Kebbell, this whimsical fantasy is a live-action update of the beloved animated short from the 1940s, "Fantasia." - taken from Netflix.com

Great movie for the family. We sat down to watch it this evening, while having some pizza and sodas. My boys loved the flick, laughing at some of the scenes. Even the 4 year old was quoting some of the lines from it. Definitely a 5 star for family.

Movie Review : "Barry Munday"

Barry Munday wakes up after being attacked to realize that he's missing his family jewels. To make matters worse, he learns he's facing a paternity lawsuit filed by a woman he can't remember having sex with. - taken from IMDB.com

Sometimes you just need a corny, time-waster of a movie, and that is what I thought this one was when I put it in my queue to watch. Barry is a guy, that yes, has lost the jewels (I won't say how, as it is part of the story). Barry is also the typical, stereotyped male chauvinistic character women just believe are real creeps. That's what makes this a corny time-waster. The storyline turned out to be better than I expected, and shows some of the good side of people, and how sometimes choices we make affect other people. Overall, was a good time watching, and I give it 4 stars.

Movie Review : "The Machinist"

Trevor Reznik is a lathe-operator who suffers from insomnia and hasn't slept in a year. Slowly, he begins to doubt his sanity as increasingly bizarre things start happening at work and at home. Haunted by a deformed co-worker who no one seems to think exists, and an ongoing stream of indecipherable Post-It notes he keeps finding on his fridge, he attempts to investigate what appears to be a mysterious plot against him and, in the process, embroils two women in his madness. Written by J. Lake  - taken from IMDB.com

I am not sure how to describe this movie. First I was appalled at every scene that showed Christian Bale with his shirt off. I had heard something about the dramatic weight-loss he had gone under for this role, and to actually see it.... I was a bit grossed out. That coming from a fat man. Gives me a good insight as I recall his role in ' he Dark Knight' as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Overall I was kept somewhat guessing until about halfway through the movie. From that point it was a matter of trying to figure out the ending - which I didn't get all the details. I give a decent rating of 3 stars, mostly due to the slowness of the lot, and that I was able to figure most of it out, so the movie lost my interest a bit.

Movie Review : "Ink"

Late one night, a lost soul named Ink snatches 8-year-old Emma (Quinn Hunchar) into the world of dreams. There, he hopes to use her soul to join the ranks of the evil Incubi. In the real world, Emma lies comatose, to the despair of her father, John (Chris Kelly). But the Incubi's benevolent opposites -- the Storytellers -- rally to help Emma, motivating John to wage war for his daughter. Jessica Duffy co-stars in this dark fable.

I was leery about watching this movie at first. Though recently released (2009) and listed int he sci-fi genre, the story didn't sound all that great. About 15 minutes into it, I was stuck to the screen. A great Indie flick, made on what appears to be a fairly low budget, it pulls you in and tugs just a bit on the heart strings. No, no tears fell, but I still felt this was a great movie. I give it 4/5 stars.

Movie Review : "Jesse Stone: No Remorse"

Tom Selleck takes a sixth turn as small-town Massachusetts police chiefJesse Stone, who combats crime as well as personal issues in the movie series based on the best-selling novels by Robert B. Parker. After he's suspended from his job, Stone travels to Boston at the request of his friend Capt. Healey (Stephen McHattie) -- the state homicide commander -- to help solve a string of murders plaguing the city. - From Netflix.com

Another great 'Jesse Stone' movie. I really enjoyed Robert B. Parker's novels, many dealing with "Spenser for Hire" and this character, "Jesse Stone". In fact, in some books, they referred to each other. Either way, this is the 6th Stone movie I have seen out, and Tom Selleck plays the role perfectly from what I formed in my mind's eye while reading the novels. Definitely a 5/5 stars movie.

On a side note, I heard rumor of yet another one coming out this year...... I hope so!

Reviewing Movies

I think I will do a new format for these. I shall copy and paste the movie description from a source (IMDB.com, or maybe Netflix.com) so you can see the synopsis. Then I can follow through with my feelings of the movie. Makes it easier to tell, as I try not to tell too much of the storyline.

Movie Review : "The Losers"

Definitely not a movie that made theaters. The story is situated around a team of 5 Special Forces operatives, that are presumed killed (intentionally by the voice of their CIA boss). They are approached by a person that enables them financially to come back to the States to hunt down the boss, that at the time they only have a voice to search for. This to redeem themselves, and come "back from the dead" to the lives they had before.

Basic action flick with pretty easy plot to figure out. Decent time waster on a Saturday morning. I give it 3 out of 5 stars.

Movie Review : "The Oxford Murders"

I watched this one today and was quite impressed. John Hurt and Elijah Wood gave great roles in this twisted murder mystery. John Hurt plays the role of Professor Seldom, a mathematician, that Elijah Wood's character has traveled to Oxford University to study under. They both happen upon the scene, and body, of a possible murder. The serial killings continue, each involving mathematical figures, that these two attempt to use to solve the crimes.

I was kept involved in the story and thought I had it figured out, but I was wrong. Nice little twist in the end.
Five out of Five stars.

Movie Review : "True Grit" (2010)

The Coen Brothers adapted the screenplay for this film, and executive producer Spielberg added his name as well. First thing that comes to mind is no one can outdo the John Wayne version from back in the day. However, I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. The portrayals of the characters seemed more 'filled-in' than the John Wayne version, where he was made more a hero in appearance than the book originally had Cogburn. Jeff Bridges completed the Cogburn role as the drunk, 'take no prisoner' Federal marshall, and Matt Damon played the Texas Ranger well. Josh Brolin played the part of Tom Chaney, though I was a bit surprised he did not have more film time.

From what I remember from reading the book, this was a good adaptation. I give it a 4 star rating.

Movie Review : "The Last Airbender"

For 100 years, the Avatar, a person with the magic skills able to control the four main elements, has been missing for over 100 years. During that time, the Fire nation has gained power and is dominating all other lands. In a remote area of the Water nation, the Avatar is found, having been trapped in an ice bubble, and having no recollection of the time passed. He is still a child, through some miracle, but lacks the training to be a true Avatar (control of all elements). The movie encompasses the first "'book" of this series, which is in regards to his learning the control of water, and the first battle with the Fire Nation. The ending leaves clear opening to a sequel, though after some of the reviews and box office earnings, I think most production companies would leave it on a shelf.

Having known ahead of seeing the movie, that it is based on a children's cartoon, I was not expecting much in terms of intriguing plots with twists, or more complicated themes. I was a bit disappointed in the lack of actual martial art combat scenes, which from trailers I had viewed, I had hoped to see. Overall, if you have pre-teens, and younger to say age 6-7, they would probably enjoy this movie even if they had not seen the cartoon.

Movie Review : "Grown Ups"

I laughed my ass off for the whole length of this movie. Adam Sandler, David Spade, Kevin James, Chris Rock and Rob Schneider all together just made for a funny film about about 5 kids that played on a winning basketball team when around 12 years of age, reunited years later at the funeral of the coach. Now adults, four of which are married and have children, add the usual family problems, help bring in the extra laughs. Whenever that isn't an issue, the cut-downs they play on each other helped make the movie funny.

Book Review : "Tandem" by Tracy Bateman

This was a decent vampire story. Set in a modern day era, in a small Missouri town, two females (one human, one vampire) struggle independently with trying to not lose a family member. Lauryn McBride fights to not lose her father, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's; and Amede, who is trying to find her sister who has been gone many years. Through several plot twists, their connections and relationships develop to introduce new characters as these two reach internal, emotional finales.
Though I feel the conclusion was a bit shorter in detail than most of the story, I did enjoy the book. A bit different twist of vampire story, and plot twists kept my attention. I would be interested in reading other works from this author. I give it 3/5 stars.

This book was provided to me free for review purposes by WaterBrook Multnomah.
